I’ve only been to the Channel 4 building in Horseferry Road once. I won’t tell you why I was there, but I did hope to be ’spotted’ by someone and given a presenting job. Didn’t happen. But it’s a very cool building.
And it’s going to get a bit cooler when Channel 4 bring’s it’s iconic ‘4′ logo to life in a major new art commission, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. A 48 foot-high steel ‘4′ is being constructed on the steps of the building, and will be unveiled by the Arts Minister Margaret Hodge on 16th October.
The giant logo will mirror that of the idents, where the logo is only recognisable from certain angles, and will coincide with a major tv series on public art and art in the built environment, called the Big Art Project (I hope its better than the Tate Modern, I went there again y’day and it was as s**t as I remembered.)
Four artists over the course of 12 months will customise the Big 4, starting with Nick Knight, and then Mark Titchner and then El-Anatsui. The fourth artist will be the winner of a competition open to young arts graduates, run in conjunction with the Saatchi Gallery.
Here’s a pic of it being built.
