Honda Battle of the Bands DVD & competition in the US

October 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Very bizarre.  Honda in America has created an annual Battle of the Bands property, for five years.  Nothing new in the concept you might think.  But I bet you didn’t think it was MARCHING BANDS!!!!  No, didn’t think so.

Honda is also releasing a DVD of last year’s competition leading up the finale (”Stompin’ At the Dome”), which chronicales the trip each of the 10 bands took to make it to the final stage.  The bands nominated to compete ni the finals represent four athletic conferences of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

American Honda Motor Co. awards $141,000 in scholarships to the participating bands, and each school represented in the finals receives $10,000 grants to support music programmes.

So thats all really nice and everything…..but what does it have to do with Honda? I know I’m kind of biased because I’ve been exposed to some fantastic brand advertising in the UK and as a result think of Honda as a progressive brand not afraid to show some emotion…..but MARCHING BANDS?  Even in America.   Or am I being ignorant?

I’m taking a punt here (and feel free to correct me if you know better) but perhaps it has more to do with a member of the board who is extremely proud of a son/daughter/niece/nephew who marches in a band?

‘Cos it does sweet FA for me!
