Uniqlo ‘grid playground’ website

November 30th, 2007 · No Comments

I came across this pretty cool website from Uniqlo, which you should all know by now is about Japanese design sensibilities and simple clothes.

The site allows users from around the world to interact on the same grid of Uniqlo logos, creating a mosaic similar to those used on the retail shopping bags and in the original brand campaign that predated the store launch.  Every time someone around the world moves a piece on the grid, the change is accompanied by a sound effect.  The cacaphony of sounds makes you realize just how many people are playing on the grid at once.

What would be pretty cool, and a better link with the product, is if there were different mannequins and a selection of the clothes, in pieces.  So user’s all combine to style the mannequin and create weird combos.  Perhaps there could be moderators watching the site, students from different fashion schools around the world (that Uniqlo could support with a grass-roots campaign), and when a particularly cool combo is created, it becomes an uber-limited release.  etc etc.  probably a cr*p idea, sorry.
