Orange free iPod Nano offer - what happened to convergence?

January 30th, 2008 · No Comments

I was on the tube this morning (Piccadilly line if you must know) and saw an ad on the back page of the Metro, from Orange.  They’re offering a free iPod Nano when you buy a Samsung handset, until the end of the month.  This got me thinking about the whole ‘handset as music’ convergence thingy…

It seems at the moment that all the handset and telcos are banging on about music on your handset….with an ultimate goal of everyone leaving their iPod at home.

So it seems a little odd that Orange are actively pushing an additional piece of kit onto people, especially given that the handset the offer applies to also has music capabilities.  Even though its a very short term offer (ending 31 Jan) I think it might offer a good insight.

It makes me think that Orange are not sure that people are ready to give up all their gadgets in favour of a handset that does everything (the sales of the iPhone are a good indicator of that as well).  It also makes me think that people might not be ready to do this for a while yet, otherwise why give them something like a Nano, and not a cr**y unknown brand…something that will only last a little while.
